About the Oates Journal PDF Print E-mail

The Oates Journal is an online professional journal published by the Wayne E. Oates Institute to address issues of spirituality, ethics, and health for pastoral care givers and health care professionals. This publication is designed to share new information and facilitate dialogue and learning from colleagues.

The Oates Journal was launched by the Oates Institute in 1998 and continued regular publication through 2003. This fall (2008) the Oates Institute is renewing publication of the Oates Journal and adding two new features: (1) the publication of special issues that will group articles around a single topic and (2) the introduction of regular columnists. In addition to new articles, all of the previously published articles will be available.

The types of articles you will find in the Oates Journal will bridge the spectrum from praxis-oriented to research studies (qualitative and quantitative). They will include program descriptions and models, interviews, case studies, personal reflections, narratives and art forms that illustrate the issues, reviews, conference reports, and bibliographies. Issues these articles will address include: medical and healthcare ethics, the relationship between mind and body, caregiving rituals, end of life issues/hospice care, critical pathways, wellness programs, multicultural and interfaith issues, pastoral care in practice and theology, models for ministry and practice, and spirituality.

Publication of the Oates Journal follows a dynamic model made possible by the Internet. This model allows us to publish articles in a continuous flow to include a wide range of voices. The table of contents for the Journal will constantly change to reflect the most recently published articles. Once published, an article will remain current for several months, and finally be archived within the annual volume to remain available for research.
