Psalm 61

I call upon you from the ends of the earth
with heaviness in my heart;*
set me upon the rock that is higher than I.

(Book of Common Prayer)

There are a number of voices that speak to me—the voice of reason, of compassion, of longing, of delight, to name a few. Some of these are higher than I—they come from a place other than my everyday sight. They are uplifting. Others weigh heavily in my heart. Many of those are nameless; they skulk around whispering their leaden messages. Lately I identified one in particular--the voice of illness. This voice is one of worry, of discouragement, of anticipation of worse things that may yet come. It creeps into my little pains; it inflames my imagination and therefore my body. I recognize it now as one that has been there for some time, but without making its identity clear to me. Now that I hear it, I will acknowledge it when it speaks and invite one of my other voices to be in dialogue with it. I will call on one of my higher voices, the speaker of wisdom, of wholeness.
